Did you know Portland ranks number 10 on a list of the most popular U.S. cities to have a cat? That’s according to a July 2024 article in U.S. News & World Report (tinyurl.com/2vsdjn7h).
This factoid came to us just in time because dogs got their day in the sun with our “Paw”spectives column in the July-August newsletter. So it is only fair that the cats (and their persons) in our neighborhood get equal time. If cats had their say, however, they’d likely demand more than equal time! We asked a few kitty cohorts the following question:
“What makes for a PURRfect day?”
“I harass my mom for food bright and early, then love being in my catio to watch the neighborhood crows, bunnies, and squirrels. After all that hard work, I take a long nap. My mom doesn’t let me outside on my own because she says I couldn’t handle a coyote or raccoon, but what does she know?” (Douglas Fir, 7 years in B-W)
“Meow! I love to wake up as early as possible and lay close to my human’s ear and meow as loud as I can. A few years ago, my human started ‘working from home.’ I love that we get to spend more time together, and I really enjoy helping her on the computer. We make a great team. “A PURRfect day is watching the Alameda Bike Bus go by on Wednesday mornings. I like the kids and the tunes.” (Millie, 6 years in B-W)
“Gently bopping my mom-person (MP) awake at 4:30 a.m., getting a belly rub from my MP or the spare person, eating, napping on top of my MP (as a favor to her, duh), eating again, and making sure my MP and the spare person are in bed so I can sleep — again. Purrrrrrr” (Abby, 4 years in B-W)
“Hi, I’m a new boy in the ‘hood who just moved to Alameda Ridge in April. I like to live my best life by bird watching off the back deck or napping the day away on my favorite mini sofa.” (Simon, less than 1 year in B-W)
