BWNA volunteers working on a three-day street art project in front of Amalfi’s restaurant on Fremont Street were tested by the weather in mid-July. Excessive heat shut down the effort one day, and thunderstorms and lightning made for some excitement on the last day. Just like the postal service, however, nothing deterred these BWNA volunteers from their “appointed rounds.”
For the project, artwork was submitted earlier by neighborhood students, then transferred and painted onto the designated bump-out areas by volunteers. Although it’s a beautification project, the street art is also a safety feature, giving more visibility to the nearby crosswalks. Kids and adults were invited to put their painted handprints on a corner location, signifying “hands across the community.”
While he couldn’t control the weather, the very organized event coordinator John Sandie, a BWNA board member, had all the necessary instructions and supplies on hand for volunteers, making for smooth sailing (and painting) for the crew. John, in turn, was happy to see folks show up to help.
“I have so much appreciation for the artistically talented volunteers who turned the students’ artwork into a fun little showcase that all visitors on Fremont can enjoy,” John said.
