Lights Out: Take Action to Help Protect Birds this Fall!
The Bird Alliance of Oregon reports that many millions of birds will fly over Oregon this fall on their way to their wintering grounds. You can help keep them safe by turning off any non-essential lights from 11 p.m. to dawn during the critical peak migration period between September 19 and October 19. And that’s not all! Consider making this a nightly habit year round to reduce impacts on migrating or nesting birds as well as fish, amphibians, mammals, insects, and human health! Pacific Holiday Turns 5
Consignment store Pacific Holiday at 4443 NE Fremont St. celebrates its fifth anniversary in September. This is an important milestone; according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 45% of businesses fail before their fifth anniversary. And in Pacific Holiday’s case, it was necessary to navigate during a pandemic. Hats off to owner Allyson Medeles, her crew, and the consignors who share their pre-loved clothing and accessories!

Slow Down on NE 42nd Avenue
The Portland Bureau of Transportation will reduce the speed limit on NE 42nd Avenue to 20 mph from NE Prescott Street to NE Killingsworth Street. The new speed limit supports the City of Portland’s Vision Zero goal to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries on our streets. Speed is a factor in nearly half of all deadly crashes that occur in Portland. At lower speeds, it is easier to avoid crashes altogether. A New Place to Play Opening in Beaumont Village
Opening sometime in October, if the renovation schedule goes as planned, The Paladins League will open at 4765 NE Fremont St. in the space formerly occupied by Deeply Rooted. The business will be a family-friendly social club and gathering space for playing tabletop board games. Look for more information about The Paladins League in the November-December BWNA newsletter. Sober Living Center to Open at 42nd and Prescott
BWNA earlier reported on the Society 42 building, a sort of “communal” living development with 44 bedrooms at the southwest corner of NE 42nd and Prescott Street. Recently completed, tenancy in its entirety will be by the non-profit 4D Recovery for use as a sober living center. Residents will move in sometime in late fall.
Tony Vezina, 4D’s executive director, explained that 4D has over a decade of experience helping people find sobriety and overcome alcohol and drug addiction; securing the Society 42 building for its use is the organization’s latest effort to achieve this community goal.
“The program will support people exiting drug treatment who want to continue their sobriety with the help of recovery mentors and a sober environment,” said Vezina. “Participants must graduate treatment before entering the program, agree to be sober while in the program, and act as good neighbors during their stay.”
