Beaumont-Wilshire & Alameda Share Sponsorship Cost of Popular Event
Nothing says summer like sitting outside under the stars to watch a movie in Wilshire Park with family and friends. At this year’s Movie in the Park, Little Mermaid, a Disney live-action film, was the main draw, but kids dancing to youthful tunes played by the Mo Phillips Trio, face painting stations, and ice cream vendors enhanced the festive atmosphere. Also a hit was a taxidermy coyote supplied by Alameda neighbor Barbara Brower of the Urban Coyote Project, who presented information about how to live comfortably with coyotes.
While Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) sets up the movie screen and brings in the food vendors, it’s the $1,000 fee required by PP&R and paid by the Beaumont-Wilshire and Alameda neighborhood associations that makes the event possible. The two neighborhood associations also provided the face painting stations; BWNA covered the expense of the band. A movie each year isn’t a given — BWNA and ANA file a joint application seeking to secure a summer movie, successfully doing so in 2023 and again this year. PP&R estimated nearly 800 people attended this year’s event.
