An article about the newly opened Lil Doggie Daycare in our July-August newsletter stated the small-dog daycare was the first of its kind in the Portland area. We have discovered that information was incorrect; there are, indeed, other small-dog daycares in Portland. BWNA apologizes for the error.
Lights Out: Take Action to Help Protect Birds this Fall!
The Bird Alliance of Oregon reports that many millions of birds will fly over Oregon this fall on their way to their wintering grounds. You can help keep them safe by turning off any non-essential lights from 11 p.m. to dawn during the critical peak migration period between September 19 and October 19. And that’s not all! Consider making this a nightly habit year-round to reduce impacts on migrating or nesting birds as well as fish, amphibians, mammals, insects, and human health! NET News: They’re Baaaack!
Beaumont-Wilshire Alameda Neighborhood Emergency Team (BWA NET) meetings have resumed after a pandemic-induced hiatus. Neighborhood Emergency Teams comprise Portland residents trained by Portland Bureau of Emergency Management and Portland Fire & Rescue to provide emergency disaster assistance within their own neighborhoods.
A small but stalwart group is meeting monthly to update the operational plan and fine-tune communication practices. Look for emergency preparedness articles in future BWNA newsletters.

Fremont Street’s Sylvan Learning Hits 45-Year Mark
In 1979, Mount St. Helens began stirring, Asteroids hit arcade screens, and Sony launched the Walkman. That same year, Sylvan Learning was founded right here in Portland, taking its name from Sylvan Hill near the original medical center where it opened.
Just one year later, on October 21, 1980, the Fremont Sylvan Learning Center opened its doors — and it’s been here ever since. As the first Sylvan franchise, and now longest-operating location, the Fremont center holds a unique place in Sylvan’s history. Today, Sylvan has over 700 locations worldwide, but it all started right here.

Help BWNA Raise Moolah — Be a Garden Tour Host in 2026!
BWNA has been getting fantastic feedback about the many events it has sponsored over the past couple of years. Events, however, including Movie-in-the-Park, the Skidmore Block Party, speaker forums, and projects like Flags on Fremont cost the association money.
While some of our revenue for these events comes from our beloved newsletter advertisers and event sponsors, it’s not enough to keep up the event-making pace our neighborhood has enjoyed.
To raise money for the continuation of these fun and free community events, it’s essential we have a big fundraiser each year. The event most likely to raise those funds is the Art & Garden Tour, previously held in 2023 and 2024. If you’re game to be one of several garden hosts next summer, you can help us keep our association coffers healthy for continued community-enhancing events and good work.

Local Youth Now a Lego Legend!
Congratulations are in order for Beaumont-Wilshire neighbor and 2023 Grant High School graduate, Alex Sahli. He is the designer of Lego’s newest Lego Ideas set: a 3,300-piece set named The Italian Riviera.
Alex designed and submitted the project to the Lego Ideas platform in 2022 at age 17. After receiving the necessary 10,000 backing votes from the Lego community, the project was selected last year to be made into an official Lego set.
“When I was a kid, I got a box of LEGO bricks, and soon after I got my first real set. I was hooked,” Alex said. “So, I’ve been a Lego fan almost my entire life, though I started designing custom, large-scale Lego projects in 2021.”
