Barb Strunk grew up in Portland, and has lived in Beaumont-Wilshire since shortly after graduating from college. She and her husband Loren bought their house on 35th Place in 1976, and have lived and gardened there ever since.
Barb recently retired from a career as a nurse and manager at Kaiser Permanente, and is finding plenty of things to do with her new-found free time. Aside from her lifelong passion for gardening, she has also taken up birding in a pretty serious way.
Barb was heavily involved in the neighborhood attempt to stop the recent teardown on 35th Place. In the aftermath, her search for ways to help find solutions for the future lead her to the Beaumont-Wilshire Neighborhood Association, and a position on the board. She believes that increased density is possible without destroying the character of existing neighborhoods, and that the way to achieve this is through appropriate changes in the zoning laws and regulations on a city-wide basis. To that end, she has been attending City Council and Development Review Advisory Committee meetings, and working through the BWNA to raise awareness of the issue.
